Interview with Skuki
At last, I was able to get hold of these dudes!! After months of rescheduling Gbedutainment was able to conclude the interview with one of the fastest growing groups in Nigeria (if not the fastest growing), Skuki. They first caught our attention in 2008 after the release of their hit single ,Fire. After that, they followed up with two other singles and the industry was left with no choice than to appreciate these creative duo. They have won many awards including the prestigious Hip Hop World award for the Next Rated artistes of the year; an award that goes to the most promising upcoming act. All these was achieved even before the release of their debut album. Enjoy my conversation with these fun filled guys!
Gbedutainment: First of all, what does the word Skuki mean?
Skuki: Well, at first we were called impromptu, we were just chilling someday and Peeshaun came up with Skuki.
Gbedutainment: “Peeshaun”, ” Vavavoom”, “Skuki”… Where the heck did those names come from?
Skuki: You know we are youthful and we represent the youth, we wanted names that people from our generation would be able to relate to. Peeshaun is the sound the gun makes after it has been fired. And Vavavoom is just something that has to do with the sexual part of us. You know Skuki is a combo of slim and sexy dudes… (laughs)
Gbedutainment: Hmm… You guyz are really crazy, so how did you guys come about Skuki, how did you meet each other?
Skuki: Actually we are brothers, a lot of people think we are twins but Peeshaun is a year older.
Gbedutainment: Wow… brothers?… So how did your parents take this music thing when it all started?
Skuki: They have been really supportive.
Gbedutainment: You dropped your album sometime ago, how is it doing in the market?
Skuki: Mehn! Its doing really great we thank our fans and well wishers.
Gbedutainment: Are you guys planning any international tour at the moment, to Europe or the US?
Skuki: We are really busy at the moment, but soonest we will hit Europe and then The States. Don’t worry we will come and blow banger in the US.
Gbedutainment: What does banger actually mean, because I know you guys don’t mean the regular “knockout” we know about.
Skuki: Banger is an abbreviation, it means “Building Africa’s New Generation to Entertainment and Recreation”.
Gbedutainment: Coool! That’s creative. So what should your fans be expecting from you guys soonest… Any new jam?
Skuki: You know we just dropped our album, so we still trying to let people enjoy it to the fullest before we start dropping more fire.
Gbedutainment:We have witnessed break ups from a lot of groups, after success of 1 album or 2, they decide to go solo… Is Skuki considering that too?
Skuki: Breakup? That’s not possible with us, don’t forget we are brothers from same parents. There is that blood running in us, we’re even mistaken for twins because we act so much like we are. Fine! we have our arguments and all dat, but we always make sure it ends positive. We also have our family behind us, our mum especially. She would always call to ensure we are good.
Gbedutainment: What do you consider a major problem the Nigerian music industry is facing?
Skuki: Piracy!! whoa! It has really eaten deep into our industry! The artist is not able to benefit from the sales of his own work(album). Its like a canker worm and has to be uprooted from our system. There are some reform strategies being set up to curb piracy and with the support of the government, private bodies and consistency from recognized agencies, we definitely would find a way out.
Gbedutainment: Thank you guys for spending time with Gbedutainment, it’s been a long time coming.
Skuki: Thanks for having us EniTan, we hope it’s worth the wait
And also when we say MA YI E NI B.A.N.G.E.R, always know that it’s aimed towards positivity and transformation. The B.A.N.G.E.R foundation is going to be launched pretty soon and it would be our own way of reaching out to the youth and society at large.
Here’s the video to their smash hit “Banger” which featured DJ Zeez
