Interview with Frenzy

Born Emmanuel Okafor, Frenzy is the last child of three. He hails from the eastern state of Anambra, Nigeria. Early in his childhood,he moved to Lagos where he is based till date. Frenzy is one of the most popular Hiphop producers in Nigeria, and has worked with lots of A list artistes including Sasha P, BOUQUI, illBliss and the late rapper Dagrin. Gbedutainment had an interviewe with him sometime ago and he talked about his past works, projects and his encounter with Dagrin.

Gbedutainment: Yo Frenzy!!

Frenzy: WHAAAT!?!?!

Gbedutainment: Lol. Okay, tell us how it all started, where did the interest in music production come from?

Frenzy: It started back in high school, got influenced by listening to rappers like 2pac, Nas & Bonethugs and Dre.

Gbedutainment: Are you also an artiste or just a producer?

Frenzy: I first started as a rapper then later developed interest in production because I felt in Naija hiphop, no one does it like Dre & Swizz Beatz.

Gbedutainment: Hmm… So is it safe to say Dre and Swizz Beatz are your mentors in the aspect of music production?

Frenzy: Yeah, but most especially Swizz Beatz.

Gbedutainment: Okay… So what has been your biggest challenge since you stepped into the music industry, or should I say music production industry?

Frenzy: Lack of power supply and wack artists misusing my instrumentals. Sometimes it takes extra extra work to fix them… its crazy.

Gbedutainment: Talking about wack artists, how do you tell an artist that comes with money in his pocket but does wack music? Do you tell him you can’t work with him, or just do your business?

Frenzy: Even my ear says “God forbid” whenever I hear what is bad. As you can see, Frenzy is not everywhere because I am very very selective, most times I do it for the love and not for the money… so what I do is try to fix them right or collect the money first, then send them back home to do the proper assignment.

Gbedutainment: Okay, You have worked with various stars ranging from Bouqui to Rooftop MCs to Dagrin and a lot more, which would you say is your favorite and which is the most challenging?

Frenzy: Illbliss has been my favorite and Dagrin was the most challenging because he was real and hard working.

Gbedutainment: Okay. You produced Dagrin’s last jam “If I Die…

“. Okay! Tell us, what was it like when he came to your studio and told you he wanted to do his own death song? Wasn’t it weird and scary?

Frenzy: It wasn’t as if he wanted to do a song for his death. Actually, I was supposed to produce several songs for his next album before he died, but that day was for a collabo session with another artist featuring him. After the session he told me he wanted to record a freestyle and of course I agreed. Then in the vocal booth, I started hearing the hook “if I die”. I asked him why he had such a hook and he said that was the way the inspiration came. So I continued believing it was going to be trash after the end of the recording session.

But like he said in the song that nobody will understand, I really didn’t understand until he died. Then I knew the song was a calling that no man could stop. Only God knows better. Even after the recording on February, I never listened to the song again until he died in April

Gbedutainment: Hmm…. I feel you. So what was your first reaction when you heard about his death?

Frenzy: I cried like never before. That was the first day I cried for someone in my whole life. Very deep.

Gbedutainment: Sorry about his loss.

Frenzy: Thank you.

Gbedutainment: So where do you see Frenzy and Frenzy production in 5 years time?

Frenzy: I see Frenzy known worldwide as the best in five years time, by God grace.

Gbedutainment: I say amen to that. So what should we be expecting from you next, are you currently working on any project?

Frenzy: Yeah, actually I’ve always dream t about having my own record label, so right now am working on my projects. The name of the label is Black Survivors, presenting a rap artist called Nasty J. At the same time, I’m also working on my own singles, and I’m really looking out for Sponsors and Bigger labels to slash with.

Gbedutainment: Okay… Good luck on that! So any advice for upcoming or aspiring producers/artistes?

Frenzy: Yeah… My advice is they should trust in God, work hard, and believe in themselves. Be patient and honest… and lastly, the devil is a liar so say no to I CANT, because U CAN!

Gbedutainment: Okay, thanks Frenzy! Its been nice chatting with you. Good luck in your career!

Frenzy: Thanks man, I really appreciate you having me on this!
