News: Wizkid, Cabo Snoop & Fally Ipupa Contend for MTV EMAs

MTV has announced the nominees for the “2011 MTV EMA” with Lady Gaga leading the pack with six nominations, and Katy Perry and Bruno Mars following closely behind with four nominations.   British songstress Adele, who stands as the top-selling artist of the year, has been nominated for three awards, with Justin Bieber and Thirty Seconds To Mars also up for three.  The 18th annual MTV EMA will take place on Sunday 6 November at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena, airing on MTV channels around the world including MTV (DStv 321) and MTV Base (DStv 322).

New this year is the World Wide Act category, which celebrates diversity and the breadth of all the music that MTV has to offer by nominating incredible artists from all corners of the world.  Fans will be able to vote for an artist/group within five different regions (Asia Pacific, North America, Latin America, Africa/India/Middle East and Europe).  The nominee from each region with the most votes (to be announced the week of 24th October) will then battle for the “World Wide Act” distinction – to be bestowed at the show in Belfast.

Two of the reigning queens of pop will go head to head at this year’s EMA in four of the same categories, as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry compete for Best Live, Best Pop and Best Female, as well as Best Song, with Perry nominated for “Firework” and Gaga for “Born This Way”.   Gaga is also nominated for Best Video for “Born This Way” and Biggest Fans.  Multi-talented singer/songwriter Bruno Mars is up for four awards, including Best New, Best Male, Best Push and Best Song for “Grenade.” Adele has been nominated for Best Female, as well as Best Song and Best Video for “Rolling In The Deep”, and Justin Bieber will compete for Best Pop, Best Male and Biggest Fans.  Thirty Seconds To Mars is up for Best Alternative, Best World Stage and Biggest Fans.

As always, the MTV EMA – MTV’s international celebration of the year’s best in music – features nominees from across genres, recognizing today’s hottest acts and global superstars.  Foo Fighters, Snoop Dogg, My Chemical Romance, Jennifer Lopez, LMFAO, Jessie J, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Eminem, Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Far East Movement, Kanye West, Linkin Park, Wiz Khalifa and Kings of Leon are each up for two EMA nominations.

Also new to the “2011 MTV EMA” is the Biggest Fans award, which will go to the most passionate fan base for a particular artist.  Beginning Monday, 19th September, viewers can vote for their favourite EMA artists by visiting www.mtvema.com.  The more fans engage with the EMA content featured on the site, the more their participation and points can boost the chances for their favourite artist to win.

News: Doggext Set To Drop Mixtape

Jamiu Bolarinwa also known as Doggext is a Nigerian hip-hop artist based in Boston, Massachusetts. Born on August 16, 1982, Doggext was raised in Mushin, Nigeria.   He started his music career in 1998 at his alma mater, Ansar Ud Deen College in Lagos, Nigeria, performing primarily at social night events on campus.  While at Ansar, he was given the nickname Snoopy. However, at the same time, rapper DMX was an artist whose style and intensity he thoroughly enjoyed so he consequently created his own alter ego “DoggX” which was written as such to retain the “Dogg” in Snoop Doggy Dogg as well as to incorporate his newfound interest in the rapper DMX, but in late 1999, he made one last modification to the name, changing it from “DoggX” to “Doggext”.

Doggext’s lyrics are grounded in his perception of life, his milieu, and his jokes. He is often comical but never fails to drive his point home. Also, the manner in which he fuses American English with Yoruba—one of the main languages in Nigeria—keeps his flow diverse and his audience entertained and this style has earned him numerous comparison to the late Nigerian rapper, Dagrin.  Although their lyrical content are not similar, both artists represent Mushin with their music.

In 2002, Doggext relocated to the United States where he continued composing, recording, and performing for various audiences. He is currently in the studio working with different artists from  United Kingdom, United States and also Nigeria. He has teamed up with artists on SwanBallaz Records to record some tracks that were recently illustrated in the mixtape ‘SwaggaKings presents Jacking for Beats. Doggext has collaborated with EMX on recently released track If You Know and also R & B artist Duncan Daniels on Do Me. In December 2010, the video for his hit track, Holla @ Me Freestyle premiered on various digital platforms of music and entertainment blogs including Notjustok.com, Amebor.com and of course, yours’ truly. The freestyle track was also included in the D.J Kobe Presents Omo Mushin Mixtape which is set to drop on April 1st, 2011  at an exclusive red carpet affair at the Caprice Ultra Lounge, 275 Tremont street, Boston.

You can listen to one of the tracks on the mixtape below. It’s a remix to Wiz Khalifa’s Black and Yellow.
